Word gets around...
I tend to assume that I've lost contact with most of my ex-coworkers - particularly those from 8+ years ago. I'm always surprised to find that I may have lost contact with them but they haven't with me - every time someone pops up from the past, they know exactly who I am! I suppose it's obvious to anyone with enough clue to use google!

Ahhh, yes, but in the meantime, you've prolly gained contact with so many more people. Me, for one.

I was at a tradeshow in Detroit, some ex-colleagues just walked up to me and said, "Hi Rebecca, good to see you". I hadn't told them, but news does get round - or rather gossip gets round.

I'm amazed at the number of people who DON'T know! In the past couple of weeks, I had two different individuals that I haven't worked with in years resurface, and say "What happened to >old name<?" I gave them a song and dance about my being his twin sister, and he left for greener pastures.... yada yada yada. I'm still not comfortable with all of that. Roby suggested that simply saying "He's no longer with the company" is most appropriate. I'm still not sure though..

Oh lord yes! I used to get people assuming I was my sister! :o)

Fwiw, over the longer run, all this stuff does settle down :o)

In the early stages of transition, when dropping the kids off at school, some other parents assumed I was my own girlfriend. (I.e. the kids stepmum) That pleased me...

I get that a fair bit with suppliers and customers who didn't know me that well before - I think some have figured it out and one is a friend of a friend and apparently got very confused when it was explained to him...

We're often lurking quietly in the background

In your case, the background is usually the best place... ;-)
